UPDATE: Countdown to the PLOS iGEM 2016 Project

UPDATE: Tips and Advice for the PLOS iGEM Online Peer Review Jamboree – rewatch our workshop on YouTube.

The countdown is on to the PLOS iGEM 2016 live peer review jamboree, with just over two weeks to go, but it’s not too late for teams and reviewers to sign up and get involved!

Igemlogo_bannerAs detailed in our recent blog post, PLOS and the iGEM foundation have entered a second year of collaboration to publish work from the 2016 iGEM competition. This year, in an exciting new development, we will also be working with Breezio to host a real-time peer review jamboree.

How does the real-time peer review jamboree work?

iGEM teams are working on their submissions in the PLOS iGEM Project Portal  with a deadline of 22 January 2017. Reviewers can also sign up at the same place. On the day of the peer review jamboree, 28 January 2017, all of the teams’ work will be made available publicly to members of the portal.

This is when things will get interesting! Our aim is to have team members and reviewers online at the same time throughout the day on 28 January. Reviewers can post their reports as inline comments, or as comments on the work as a whole. Members of the team will then be able to respond, ask for further clarification, request recommendations, and so on. Anyone can jump into a conversation at any time, which should lead to interesting discussion, new ideas and, ultimately, improvements in the work of the iGEM teams.

We’ve already had a great response from iGEM teams and potential reviewers, with lots of people signing up to participate from all over the world. There’s always room for more though, and we’d love to encourage any iGEM team members to register for an account and to submit their work for the event. The deadline for submissions is 22 January 2017.

Get involved!

If you’re an iGEM alum, a synthetic biology expert or enthusiast, or have a general interest in peer review, then we’d love to have you as a reviewer. Head on over to the portal where you’ll find all the relevant information in the “PLOS Welcome” room.

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact the PLOS Collections team ( and we look forward to receiving even more submissions, and to the realtime peer review jamboree in a couple of weeks!
